Here are some of our favorite everyday phrases that make life in Baja even sweeter:
• Ahorita
This one’s a classic. It means “right now,” or “in a few minutes,” or “maybe next week,” or “when the stars align.” Context is everything. It’s less about the clock and more about the flow of life.
• ¿Quién sabe?
“Who knows?” A perfectly Baja way to release what’s out of your control and move on with a grin.
• Provecho
Literally “may it nourish you.” Say it when you walk past people eating—it’s a warm, universal nod to good food and good company.
• Con permiso
“With permission.” Use it to politely pass someone in a store, or simply as a small gesture of respect. Here, courtesy still matters.
• Poco a poco –
“Little by little.” It’s the unofficial rhythm of Mexico. Life here doesn’t rush, and that’s the point. Every good thing— language, love, life, and tacos —takes time.
• Claro que sí (mi amor)
“Of course (my love).” Equal parts affirmation and affection.
• Gracias por la comida
A simple, beautiful thanks for the meal and the moment.
• Por favor / Porfa
“Please.” Easy, essential, and endlessly useful.
• Chido / ¡Qué chido!
“Cool!” or “How cool!” Show enthusiasm. Baja runs on good energy.
• Muy rico
“So good.” The chef’s kiss of compliments—better than “delicioso.”
• Con cuidado
“With care.” A heartfelt goodbye that means take care on your way.
• ¡Bien perrón!
Our family favorite at the Fitz Team. Totally slang, a little cheeky, and it means “pretty freaking great!”! This one never fails to get a smile.
